Ingredients Needed:
- Flour + Salt + Baking soda
- Unsweetened cocoa powder
- Sugar
- Butter
- Water
- Milk
- Vanilla
- Eggs
Baking Pan Size: You will need a large flat rimmed baking sheet for this cake. I used my 17 x 12 baking pan for mine. I do highly recommend this pan! It’s from Nordic and a link to purchase can be found in the recipe card. ( note: it is an affiliate link)
How to Make:
- First, make your batter. Mix together the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl, then, set aside. In a saucepan, you will melt the butter with water and cocoa powder.
- Bring this mixture to a boil. Be sure you keep a close eye on it and stir in frequently. You don’t want it to burn 😉
- Remove it from the heat and mix it with your dry ingredients. Finally, add in the eggs, milk and vanilla. Mix it all together until combined.
- Spread the batter into a greased large rimmed baking sheet. If you don’t want to grease the pan, feel free to cover it with parchment paper instead.
- Once baked, let it cool 10-15 minutes. Then, frost it.
- Make Frosting: Melt butter with milk and bring it to a simmer. Again, keep a close eye on it and stir in frequently, to prevent burning.
- When it’s ready, remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar, plus vanilla until totally smooth.
- Spread it on top of the warm cake.
- Let the cake cool for about an hour before serving. This will give the frosting time to set. As it sets, it will thicken up a bit.
Storage: Keep any leftover cake in a covered container in the refrigerator.
