Hey There..I made you a cake today!

OK, honestly, I made this for my husband. He’s a big fan of marble cake. Last week, I was asking him for some ideas to post and he quickly suggested a marble cake. It was the perfect idea.

I mean…a yellow cake with a swirl of chocolate? !

The best of both cake worlds. 👍

Supply List

  • 2- 9 inch round cake pans + non stick cooking spray
  • Electric mixer + mixing bowl
  • 2- Medium size bowls
  • Small microwave safe bowl
  • Whisk + Butter knife
  • Measuring cups/spoons

Pin it for Later!

Ingredients List

  • Flour + Salt + Baking powder
  • Butter
  • Oil
  • Sugar
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla
  • Buttermilk
  • Chocolate chips
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Milk
  • Powdered sugar

Ingredients Notes

Butter

  • Be sure it’s softened!

Oil

  • Use a neutral tasting oil for best results. For example, canola, vegetable or sunflower.

Buttermilk

  • None on hand? Stir 1/4 cup vinegar into your 1 cup of milk and let it sit for 5 minutes before adding to the batter.

How Do I Get the Chocolate Swirl?

  • Mix your batter as instructed. Once it’s fully mixed, you will remove 1 1/4 cups of the yellow cake batter and pour into a separate bowl.
  • Spread the remaining yellow cake batter evenly into your cake pans.
  • In a microwave safe bowl, melt chocolate chips until smooth. Do this in 30 seconds intervals..you don’t want them to burn.
  • Add the melted chocolate into the reserved cake batter and whisk until it’s fully incorporated.
  • Spoon the chocolate batter randomly on top of the batter that is spread in your cake pans.
  • With a butter knife ( or a dull edge knife), cut through the chocolate batter to create a swirl pattern.
  • Don’t over swirl! You want to see a distinct difference with the chocolate and yellow cake batter.
  • Bake!

Recipe Notes

  • Grease and flour your cake pans generously. This will make removing the cakes easier. Also, let the cakes sit for 10-15 minutes after removing them from the oven before trying to remove them from the pan and cool completely before frosting.
  • Be sure your butter is softened for both the cake and frosting! It’s so important for the texture of both.

Storage

  • Keep any leftover cake or frosting in the refrigerator.
